When installing directly from github via PNPM, I wasn't able to get this working (even when correcting the key: value's in the package.json &node_modules dir, or with npm link.

Installing gemcutter right now is a bit difficult. You need Sourcify (and then edit the chains.json file and services/core/src/sourcify-chains.ts and recompile it) and Ganache. Then after running yarn you can play with it. But I'm actually working on another version a bit more stable that includes tests. If you are interested in helping out I can help you setting up the environment.
