Remove Python version dependency?

Would it be possible to remove the Python version dependency from the toml? I noticed there are already a few PRs and a open issue related to this.

It seems like a minor fix, but nothing has been merged in a while. Is this project still being maintained? If not, would you recommend forking it or looking into alternatives?

I'm currently using this library as a dependency and was hoping to contribute that minor version update, but I wanted to check in first on the status of the repo since a few others have attempted that.
