When rendinger quarto in R studio with the Rstudio render button, a different quarto render is done as dso would do.

It would be extremely helpful if the behaviour could be matched, so that users can manually compile with R studio.

Maybe useful: https://bookdown.org/yihui/rmarkdown-cookbook/custom-knit.html

Whatever works - I'm not that familiar with Rstudio to judge what is the best solution.

I would recommend both. The render button is the most used button, but the R Studio Add-in leave more options but are not as accessible.

I have scoped this, this only works for Rmd, not for qmd. Rmd display the knit button which can be customized in the header e.g.

---
knit: dso::dso_repro_addin
---

however, it does not affect the render button
