One option reduces focus on the spam, but they still take up considerable space.
The other option removes them entirely, freeing up space for actual messages, but the end-user loses all information that spam is going on in the first place. This information can be desirable if the user wants to take part in the spam themselves or react to it.
My idea is a new mode, replacing or existing alongside the others. This mode removes the repeated messages, but adds a counter to the message it is detected as similar to
