We have not tested with without a GIL. While the vast majority of the code is considered thread safe, that would definitely be an experimental build. For those willing to risk it, making a fork and removing the dependency themselves is always an option.

See also the comments in #461. As I mentioned there, I think compression by default is an important "quality of life" feature for users who just want to use the library or a package that relies on the library.

I am going to try to make a pr to add a this functionallity

for now you can add --no-deps when installing then manually remove zstandard

i think for a basic fix you can do a lazy import based on the compression method provided and if none is provided try to import zstandard as the default
