Science (& tech?) activism #14

Description

@lauranoren

It appears more important than ever for scientists and technologists to push for changes (or hold the line on) funding for science and technology and policy surrounding science and technology. While it may not be entirely clear how to impactfully "fight for science", it is clear that collective action has a history of success.

I hope we can agree that hashtag activism isn't enough.

Maybe some of you are like me, you would love to find intelligent allies who want to make an impact for others (not just for their own careers), formulate some ideas about what "the right things" are, and then commit to doing some right things.

Topics could include how to:

  • maintain current national budgets for scientific research or specific projects (e.g. the Census);
  • work with some cities' new Chief Resilience Officers at local levels on climate change and/or data-driven approaches to chronic social issues;
  • push for new national cybersecurity policy;
  • learn when and how to communicate about science & tech to undergraduates and young people;
  • learn when and how to communicate about science & tech to people long out of university;
