Hello, everyone! I direct CIEL and produce an open source dictionary for health information systems in low and middle income countries. We are the basis of health data interoperability in many countries. We might not be considered very sexy or impactful, but it is foundational public goods like updated dictionaries mapped to standards that make health information systems work together and for the data collected to be understandable an useful to others, including patients! The Columbia International eHealth Laboratory (CIEL) is based in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University in New York, USA. CIEL was initially formed as a collaboration between DBMI, the Department of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health and the Earth Institute supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Directed by Andrew S. Kanter, MD MPH, CIEL helped develop and implement health information systems for the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) in ten countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. With the completion of MVP, CIEL continued to support open source health initiatives globally via the OpenMRS community. CIEL currently provides terminology services to OpenMRS and others via the CIEL concept dictionary. This dictionary source contains over 50,000 concepts mapped to standardized code systems including ICD-10-WHO, SNOMED CT and many others. CIEL is updated on a monthly basis and is primarily distributed via the Open Concept Lab. |
