Make it Build on modern systems

Hey,

this project looks facinating and I took a look a stab at making it build an run on my fork here: https://github.com/gdg-berlin-android/embroidery-mobile

(We are planing to build a thing for an upcomming event based on that code)

If you are okay with merging back to it, or cherry pick, feel free.

The next plan for me would be to separate the app out from a library, so we can reuse the parts independently. Also modernize it just a bit.
