Hi,
I have noticed COSMIC's new licensing policies, where terms are strict and most usage falls under "Commercial Use". Since VEP can provide COSMIC identifiers (position-specific, not allele-specific) as part of its annotation output, I was curious how COSMIC considers the use of VEP for this purpose, considering e.g. the case in which VEP is integrated and part of a publicly available academic tool.
I asked the following question to the COSMIC team:
Variant Effect Predictor (VEP) is an academic tool that can provide links to
COSMIC for variants found here (position-specific, not allele specific match) -
is it so that if one integrates VEP in a service/report, this falls underneath
Commercial Use? Meaning if one is to use VEP for clinical reporting without a
Commercial license, one needs to turn off this functionality/output?
This was the response I got from COSMIC:
If you integrate the tool you are essentially integrating COSMIC data and so
yes my understanding would be that a clinical license would be required for
this.
Do you have any comments on this matter, meaning how to use VEP and stick to non-Commercial Use (wrt COSMIC)?
kind regards,
Sigve
