I can't answer the first question.
About the second question: which database do you mean? There is one which
connects each abstract word with its gloss. If you mean this one then it is
used only on Android.
We have built one sample app for iOS with GF. For that it is enough to use
the C runtime for GF. How exactly this is done on iOS, I can't explain
because I am not iOS user.
You might have a better chance to find someone to help you in the gf-dev
Google group.
