using xr-hyperref with MikTeX on Windows

Hi, I've been using MikTeX for a few years and I'm running the current version. A few days I ago I started using the SIAM macro package (https://epubs.siam.org/journal-authors#macros) for a journal article. They are using xr-hyperref to reference labels from supplemental .tex files. Unfortunately using \ref{tab:smfoo} in the example article file returns ?? for the \label{tab:smfoo} in the supplemental file. The TeXworks log file has exit code: -1895334423.
