Paper submission to JOSS

Hey folks, here is the issue we should use to track all aspects of the paper submission to JOSS; I read the submission instructions and the whole thing seems to be a fairly straightforward process. I will now create a branch where we can store the paper.md manuscript.

The paper in this branch is a draft, which means the text will have to change, and we're well aware that there may be more authors and contributions necessary. We wont submit it until a) all the authors listed have accepted authorship and approved the final draft, and b) we have approached everyone we know to have contributed to the code. In that regard, does anyone know how to contact @woutdenolf and @synaptic, both of whom I believe contributed significantly in the past. @jjhelmus It's obviously important you are happy with the text and that we haven't overplayed the role of our recent additions, even if the content is (mainly) targeting our community.

If you want to be an author on the paper, we'll need a real name, an address, and if you have it, an orcid id.
