NixOS 25.05 – Feature Freeze & Release Blockers

Hi, we are @leona-ya and @RossComputerGuy, the release managers for NixOS 25.05 ("Warbler").

We're happy to announce the kickoff of the release schedule. So, it's time to discuss the feature freeze. We want to ensure that this release is as stable and reliable as possible, and your contributions are crucial to achieving that goal, here are the two upcoming dates in that context:

• 2025-04-09 Restrict breaking changes to Release Critical Packages
• 2025-04-23 Restrict all breaking changes

The first restriction will be in place quite soon, therefore, we encourage all teams to check in now and mention possible blockers, so we get a good overview of what's ahead.

Whether you were pinged or not, we encourage everyone to create issues for release blockers and add them to the 25.05 Blockers project.

Please comment your status quo and possible issues as soon as possible. We'll check teams once they have checked in.

If you think some subsystem, person or team should be added or removed from this list, update maintainers/team-list.nix in time before the next feature freeze announcement.

Qt 6.9 should be dropping next week, which will be mildly spooky, otherwise Plasma is good to go.

There shouldn't be any blockers for the Hyprland team. Hyprland 0.48 and Aquamarine 0.8 were recently released, but they have both been updated successfully.

No blockers for DDE， DDE 25 is still very immature, I am waiting for deepin 25 to be released in the second half of the year

for Reproducible Builds, we're on track for the minimal ISO to be bit-by-bit reproducible again (with one remaining issue in the unmaintained jemalloc package and one fix already in the staging pipeline).

It would be awesome to also reproduce the Graphical ISO, but it doesn't seem likely we'll hit that milestone for this release yet - join us on Matrix at #reproducible-builds:nixos.org 😄

  Need to finish splitting off Nixpkgs release notes and sort out the existing entries. @adfaure said he'll pick this up this week.

On the Lix side, we are gearing up for a 2.93.0 release. The 2.92.0 release in nixpkgs will probably be skipped over for efficiency reasons.

We also are merging our rewiring module inside nixpkgs to enable better UX for our users, but nothing that should be impactful for a NixOS release, IMHO.
