Make this term clearer: Swiss Oblique Mercator

I believe the general sentiment in this thread is that Swiss Oblique Mercator group of projections could have a clearer name. It is somewhat confusing that Hungary's national projection (Egységes országos vetület, link from here) is a Swiss Oblique Mercator projection.

Swiss Style Oblique Mercator came up as a suggestion. I'm sure there can be other reasonable ones.

Not a burning issue. It was suggested that I bring this up here, and I agree it's probably something you might want to consider.

Your confusion is caused by a grouping done by QGIS. When you ask PROJ about the CRS in question you don't get any mentions of Switzerland, Swiss or any other similar varieties. I'd probably argue that grouping by the type of projection CRS's are based on is not the best way to go.

With that said, the name "Swiss Oblique Mercator" has been tentative for more than twenty years now. At what point do you go from tentative to permanent? :)

@kbevers, QGIS uses the PROJ.4 string to know which projection is used by each CRS. The PROJ.4 string for EPSG:23700 "HD72 / EOV" reported by PROJ is:

projinfo -o PROJ EPSG:23700
PROJ.4 string: +proj=somerc +lat_0=47.1443937222222 +lon_0=19.0485717777778 +k_0=0.99993 +x_0=650000 +y_0=200000 +ellps=GRS67 +units=m +no_defs +type=crs

The somerc projection is called "Swiss Oblique Mercator" by PROJ https://proj.org/en/stable/operations/projections/somerc.html and thus by QGIS.
