Modify the floating platform of the IEA-15MW.

Hello everyone,

I want to run a simulation of the IEA-15MW floating wind turbine case, but I don't want to use the original UMaine VolturnUS-S semi-submersible floating platform. I would like to replace it with a different floating platform. How should I do that?

If you have the properties of the "different" floating substructure, you should set the hydrodynamic properties in HydroDyn, the mooring properties in MoorDyn, and the structural properties of the platform in ElastoDyn (or in SubDyn, if you prefer structural flexibility and hydro-elasticity of the substructure). Changing the floater could also impact the tower mode shapes, which you should also change in ElastoDyn.

So, is it sufficient to just modify the parts related to the floating platform in these files, or is there a need to convert anything using a specific program or follow a particular conversion process?

Thank you for your response. However, if the turbine is not installed at the center of the platform but instead mounted at one of the corners of a triangular-shaped platform, how can we ensure that the simulation is carried out with the turbine positioned at one corner of the platform?

OpenFAST can certainly model floaters such as the WindFloat where the tower is placed on an offset column rather than in the center of the floater. This topic has been discussed before here and on our forum, e.g. see:
