simple-input doesn't work with Java 9+

@keiran-lawrey thanks for the issue, but when raising issues please provide a detailed description so we can reproduce this issue if possible, for example - please reference a failing test or code sample or at the very least screenshot, this way we can assign the issue to other members of the team if required.
