Symbol pane undocked, cannot redock

Somehow my fingers or mouse slipped; I have no idea what I did but...

The symbol pane has come undocked. Rather than its usual form attached to the main editing window, it has turned into an independent, borderless window which cannot be moved, resized or redocked.

This appears to be an application-level setting; it occurs whichever map I open, but does not occur if I reboot in Windows and open the same maps there.

Presumably this is a feature. How do I reverse it?

I reproduced the problem with Mapper built from the current master (commit 34d8064), on Arch Linux.

I dragged the title bar of the symbol window, which undocked that widget. I could not find a way using the GUI to return it to "docked".

The undocked behavior is saved in ~/.config/OpenOrienteering.org/Mapper.conf, in the section titled [OpenOrienteering%3A%3AMapEditorController]. I was able to restore the usual "docked" behavior of the widget by either

1. using a text editor to delete that section, both the title and the binary blob called "state".
2. restoring the configuration file from a backup.

Q: Are you both using wayland? If yes, does it reproduce in X, or with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb?

I was using Wayland. When I switch to X11, it works OK. In X11, if I drag the widget by the title bar, a blue zone appears along the edge of the edit window, where I can drop to dock the widget.

Reminds me that I saw the behavior with OO Mapper and Wayland some time ago. It's easy to replicate:
QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland Mapper -> Re-docking impossible. The undocked widget lacks the top bar.

QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb Mapper -> Re-docking possible.

LibreMapper, which is built with Qt 6, does not have the problem.

How do I reverse it?

Start Mapper from command line with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb Mapper and re-dock the symbol pane. HTH

Thank you! QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb Mapper worked and has allowed me to get back to normal. Very happy and appreciate the speed with which you all replied.

FWIW:

• editing ~/.config/OpenOrienteering.org/Mapper.conf to remove the [OpenOrienteering%3A%3AMapEditorController] block: no apparent difference
• editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to WaylandEnable=false and restarting in X: the rogue window had handles but was locked in position and although the contents of the window were active, the minimise/close boxes were dead:

This seems to be a known issue with Qt5/Wayland, and I really think this should have been resolved by Qt5 and distros.
I could try to integrate the workaround into our packages, but I'm not sure about the dependencies which would come with forcing the xcb backend.
