New website template for virtual ship?

To increase the visibility of the virtual ship, it may be good to overhaul the landing page of virtualship.oceanparcels.org. it would be nice if we could use the same template as oceanparcels.org itself.

I believe a nice animation for the homepage would be to showcase an entire experiment, including drifters and shipboard measurements, along with icons for each of the instruments. What do you think about this?

Yes, very good idea! Do you have the skills/time to make something like that? Ideally in square format, so we can put it on the place of the animation on the oceanparcels website

I don't think it would be possible to get the exact same layout as the website since we have to work within the PyData Sphinx theme. There is flexibility for cards, and gifs, and stuff like that though. The pandas docs homepage, xarray docs homepage, or the parcels docs homepage will give ideas on the sorts of stuff we can do.

We can do a mockup tomorrow to see what the new layout can be.

I think there's something to be said for trying to mimic the style of the Parcels landing page, if it's possible. Would it be an option to move the docs (PyData) to docs.virtualship.oceanparcels.org, and then make virtualship.oceanparcels.org the static landing page? Or is having two subdomains in a URL too much?

We've decided to create a website using Oceanparcels.org as a starting point, then the docs will be hosted from virtualship.oceanparcels.org/docs
