Context

Someone has requested help locating data: All VA Medical Centers in the United States have vocational services / veteran readiness & employment departments to help veterans find and apply for jobs; veterans may not know what their criminal history looks like, or whether they have open warrants. They want to be able to check in advance for histories of convictions and open warrants to: resolve cases of mistaken identity; close open warrants; predict what will show up on background checks; understand what kinds of jobs may be realistic.

This requestor is from St. Louis, but every VA medical center has this problem. They can't make background checks themselves because they're a healthcare provider, and the cost is prohibitive; they spend hours researching state and county court portals.

They have said that the ability to search "court records" for every state would be an immense help.

How to help

If you'd like to take on one state at a time, leave a comment! If you make a spreadsheet to get organized, comment a link so there's no duplication of effort.

This could be done with manual research or by scripting google searches.

  • Locate sources of court records in all 50 states (some are already in our database)
    • In states without a state-wide court portal, focus on counties which contain a VA hospital (there are usually 2–3 per state)
    • Submit each source to the database.
  • Locate and submit sources of open warrants in all 50 states
    • This may be more commonly available from county sheriffs; again, focus on counties which contain a VA hospital
