Describe the bug

📌 Description

When a channel name is long, it gets truncated in the left sidebar.
Hovering over the truncated channel name does not display the full name.

This behavior has been observed in both the Web App and the Desktop App.

To view the complete channel name, a user currently needs to:

  1. Open the channel
  2. Click on the channel name in the top bar to see full details

This introduces unnecessary extra steps and negatively impacts the user experience.

🔁 Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Rocket.Chat (Web or Desktop App)
  2. Create or join a channel with a long name
  3. Look at the channel in the left sidebar
  4. Hover over the truncated channel name

✅ Expected Behavior

The full channel name should be visible on hover in the sidebar
(e.g. via a tooltip), allowing users to identify the channel without opening it.

❌ Actual Behavior

  • Channel name remains truncated on hover
  • Full name is only visible after opening the channel and clicking the top bar

🖥️ Environment

  • Platform: Web App, Desktop App (Electron)
  • OS: Windows
  • Version: Latest

💡 Why this improves UX

  • Reduces unnecessary clicks
  • Improves discoverability of channels
  • Better accessibility for long or descriptive names
  • Aligns with UX of modern chat apps (Slack, Discord)

🙋 Are you willing to submit a Pull Request?

Yes, I’m willing to work on a fix for this issue.

📝 Additional Notes

If maintainers feel this should be handled separately for Web and Desktop,
I’m happy to adjust or split the issue accordingly.

How to Reproduce

  1. Open Rocket.Chat (Web App or Desktop App)
  2. Create or join a channel with a long name
  3. Look at the channel in the left sidebar
  4. Hover the mouse over the truncated channel name
  5. Observe that the full channel name is not shown

Describe your Expected behavior

When a channel name is long and gets truncated in the left sidebar, the full channel name should be visible on hover (for example, via a tooltip).

This is expected because the complete channel name already exists but is not easily accessible. Currently, users have to open the channel and then click on the channel name in the top bar to see the full information, which adds unnecessary steps.

Showing the full channel name on hover would improve usability, reduce extra clicks, and provide a better user experience, especially for teams using long or descriptive channel names.
