The Installation Manual does not state the minimal version for MariaDB. According to https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-vs-mysql-compatibility/ MariaDB 10.0 corresponds to MySQL 5.6. MariaDB 10.0 was released in 2012. But maybe we can raise the bar already.
