I have struggled with this as well! I had a pile of thousands of saved articles on Pocket which I never had time to read. What helped me to sort this out was listening to the articles instead of waiting for a time for reading. I've been able to keep my pocket articles count in a steady number in the past two years with this trick. I've explained my workflow in a blog post last year:
