add NVSS or LAB radio emissions survey #4387
-
I need to display whole sky radio source heat-map survey in Stellarium. Purpose is to visualize radio sky, plan radio survey sessions, and explain radio sky to public during outreach. Suggested high resolution data sets include the NRAO NVSS and the L.A.B. Radio Astronomy Survey. Afraid this project is outside my skillset. |

Alexander -- when I read the brief guidance on using HiPS files in the
Stellarium User Guide it is like an unfamiliar language to me. I see the
words, but have no practical undertanding how to do it successfully.
Similarly, the data owner does not provide guidance from their end on how
to accomplish this with Stellarium or Cartes du Ciel. I believe the
current process may too sophisticated or imperfectly understood for the
average stargazer. Learning radio astronomy is using all my available
bandwidth at this time, so I was hoping for usable advice how to get this
done efficiently beyond 'read the user guide.'

Not quite success. Viewing the MW Galactic Center, Cyg A, or Cas A (strong
radio sources) and toggling the NVSS Survey on/off, there is no
difference. Only visible light imagery is displayed. I expected to see a
heat map of signal intensity around these sources. What setting am I
missing?
Thank you very much for assistance. Stellarium has been invaluable for
visible light imaging, for many years. A wonderful accomplishment.
All the Best!

LAB might be what's called *Leiden/Argentine/Bonn (LAB) Galactic HI
survey* in the list, though I'm not sure.

Brilliant! This works great! Thank you all ever so much for your interest
and assistance -- except for that whippersnapper Alexander. I take that
back...very well done Alexander.
All the Best!

You must activate the HiPS button in the bottom menu bar so that is is
bright to then show the selected HiPS. The NVSS is rather dim, LAB
(Leiden...) is brighter.
