focus doesn't seem to be transferred to other x11 apps while running full screen games

Hi, I'm running xwayland-satellite under Niri in NixOS, and playing games maximized through mod+shift+f seems to break other apps

that is, switching apps and clicking in them doesn't work. audio feedback seems to show that the mouse focus is still focused in the game (click noises, etc.)
though keyboard input does work fine.
I tried looking in the logs, but there's nothing of note there, except maybe unhandled xdgtoplevel event: ConfigureBounds
I hope I can help get this fixed
