Current state of GNU/Linux HiDPI scaling?

I've heard that font and icon scaling (HiDPI) is more or less complete on MacOS or windows. But what about GNU/Linux? From what I understand, it's fairly good but still a WIP given how it varies from GNOME to KDE to a plain WM. So what should I do to make it work as good as possible OTTB for linux?
