@dnowacki-usgs , @emontgomery-usgs, @nganju-usgs , @mmartini-usgs, @zdefne-usgs, @tarankalra-usgs and others met on Friday, June 14 to discuss the status of the CMG Portal and future directions.

Some take aways:

  • The display of time series seem the primary value of the portal. It's great to be able to see all the data we've collected displayed in one place, with filtering and plotting options that allow us to take quick looks at the data.

  • The display of model output is unreliable and rather slow. Clicking to select a time series with large datasets takes forever. These are not the fault of the portal but with the underlying sluggish performance of the web map and data services.

  • The branding of the CMG Portal is a concern. Our Program Coordinator in Reston is not going to show a page that says "Axiom Data Science" on the banner.

  • We discovered that our USGS time series data is also in the IOOS Sensor Map and that would be something our Program Coordinator would be able to show!

  • Going forward, for time series data, it seem that maybe we should give up on the USGS CMG Portal "skin" and point people to the Sensor Map for our data.

  • Going forward, for model data, I think we should head toward putting that data on the Cloud, and developing apps using HoloViz for display of model results.

  • Perhaps in the future, a highly performance HoloViz-based web map service and ERDDAP-based observational data could be combined into TerriaMAP, enhancing the charting abilities, encouraged by the awesome charting add-ons by @kdhenry for the CDI Risk Map project
