AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Certification - My Notes

Deployment Models for Cloud Computing

  • Cloud-Based Deployment
  • On-Premises Deployment
  • Hybrid Deployment

Benefits of Cloud Computing

  • Trade upfront/capital(CAPEX) expense for/with variable/operational(OPEX) expense
    • Instead of having to invest heavily in data centers and servers before you know how you’re going to use them, you can pay only when you consume computing resources, and pay only for how much you consume.
  • Stop spending money to run and maintain data centers
    • Focus on projects that differentiate your business, not the infrastructure. Cloud computing lets you focus on your own customers, rather than on the heavy lifting of racking, stacking, and powering servers.
  • Stop guessing capacity
    • Eliminate guessing on your infrastructure capacity needs. When you make a capacity decision prior to deploying an application, you often end up either sitting on expensive idle resources or dealing with limited capacity.
    • With cloud computing, these problems go away. You can access as much or as little capacity as you need and scale up and down as required with only a few minutes’ notice.
  • Benefit from massive economies of scale
    • By using cloud computing, you can achieve a lower variable cost than you can get on your own. Because usage from hundreds of thousands of customers is aggregated in the cloud, providers such as AWS can achieve higher economies of scale, which translates into lower pay as-you-go price.
  • Increase speed and agility
    • In a cloud computing environment, new IT resources are only a click away, which means that you reduce the time to make those resources available to your developers from weeks to just minutes.
    • This results in a dramatic increase in agility for the organization since the cost and time it takes to experiment and develop is significantly lower.
  • Go global in minutes
    • Easily deploy your application in multiple regions around the world with just a few clicks. This means you can provide lower latency and a better experience for your customers at minimal cost.

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM)

IAM gives you the flexibility to configure access based on your company’s specific operational and security needs. You do this by using a combination of IAM features, which are explored in detail in this lesson:

  • IAM users, groups, and roles
  • IAM policies
  • Multi-factor authentication
  1. User:
    • Directly associated with an identity in an AWS account.
    • It can directly access AWS services with its own access keys and passwords.
    • Usually created for real people or applications.
    • These users can be assigned specific permissions or certain policies can be applied to them.
    • For example, you can create an AWS user for an application and give that user access only to the S3 bucket.
  2. User Group:
    • Used to organize and manage multiple AWS users.
    • Ideal for grouping users with common permissions.
    • A policy or permission assigned to a group is automatically assigned to all users in that group.
    • For example, if you want to give the same access permissions to all developers, you can group them in a single "Developer" group.
  3. Role:
    • It is not directly associated with an ID or password, so it cannot be used to log in directly.
    • It is used to transfer permissions to another AWS service or user for a certain period of time.
    • It is frequently used to grant applications running on EC2 instances access to AWS services that these instances need.
    • When an AWS service needs access to another service, a role is used to provide this access securely.
    • For example, if you want an EC2 instance to write data to the S3 bucket, you can create a role for this EC2 instance and grant S3 write permissions to this role.
