Sounds like the app install miserably fails if carton is already installed on the system using apt :

https://forum.yunohost.org/t/could-not-install-lufi/13324

and because of a hard-coded reference to /usr/local/bin/ ...

Could it be that it's okay nowadays to use carton from Debian's repositories instead of cpam ?

Carton in Debian Buster is OK. Previous version of Debian… well, at your own risks.
