[Bug]: Python fails to extract

Which version of GAIA are you using?

Installer aborts with “Failed to extract Python” although python.zip is present

Details to help us reproduce the issue

Steps to reproduce

1. Download the latest GAIA‑Setup‑x64.exe (v0.8.2.1 + 2716580).

2. Right‑click → Run as administrator.

3. Accept default options (Hybrid Mode).

4. Installer stops during Python Setup with the popup:

   Failed to extract Python. Installation will be aborted.

The installer downloads python.zip, then fails while extracting it.

What I already tried

• Deleted all GAIA folders (%LOCALAPPDATA%\GAIA, %APPDATA%), Temp files and registry keys.
• Disabled Windows Defender real‑time protection.
• Moved the installer to C:\ to avoid long paths.
• Re‑ran installer multiple times → always stops at the same step.

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\GAIA\python\python.zip exists after the crash and its size (≈ 7 MB) matches the original download.
Manual extraction with Windows Explorer succeeds.

Any suggestions to solve the issue?

Hi @christiancdj89, couple ideas come to mind:

• We use powershell for the zip extraction, it's possible there's an issue with the execution policies in powershell. Can you try the following:
  • Try to manually unzip python using a powershell terminal (non-admin), eg:
    Expand-Archive -Path "C:\temp\python-3.11.8-embed-amd64.zip" -DestinationPath "C:\temp\python-test" -Force
  • If the above doesn't work, open a new Powershell terminal with admin rights and run: Get-ExecutionPolicy, it should return something like RemoteSigned
    • Option 1 (recommended): Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned
    • Option 2 (if option 1 did not work): Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
    • Verify policy is set by running Get-ExecutionPolicy
    • Try manually extracting in a fresh powershell terminal (non-admin)
• Do you have any anti-virus software that could be conflicting with the installation? Suggest trying again with it disabled.

Thank you for the suggestions — I’ve already tried all of them.

The following command executes without any issues:

PS C:\Users\CC\AppData\Local\GAIA\python> Expand-Archive -Path .\python.zip -DestinationPath C:\Users\CC\AppData\Local\GAIA\python

I also temporarily disabled my antivirus software, but that made no difference.

To further troubleshoot, I replicated the setup in a virtual machine. The initial installation worked successfully. However, when I ran the installer a second time, the process failed specifically during the installation of the Lemonade component. After performing a complete reinstallation, the same issue reoccurred.

I would strongly recommend enhancing the logging functionality: currently, the logs do not capture the failure details, which makes troubleshooting significantly more difficult.

@amd GAIA Team — could you please provide more detailed documentation on what exactly needs to be removed during uninstallation? The current instructions in the “Uninstallation Steps” section appear to be incomplete and may be missing critical paths or registry entries that prevent a clean reinstallation.

Hi @christiancdj89. Thanks for the feedback on missing logging and uninstallation details, we will update in a follow-up release.

A few ideas come to mind:

• it's possible a background task is being run while attempting to install the app, in this case, lemonade or gaia installation would fail. Suggest restarting your PC to make sure no processes are running and then re-installing.
• you can also try to manually delete the Lemonade and GAIA folders (typically under C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\lemonade_server and C:\Users<username>\Local\AppData\GAIA`. The installer should do this automatically but maybe there's a permission issue.
• we have not been able to reproduce this issue on our end so if you are still experiencing the problem, I suggest you record your screen of the install process and share it with us (you can share it privately by emailing us a link to the video: gaia at amd dot com).
