... and so throws an error like this:

  File "/Users/allison/anaconda/lib/python3.6/site-packages/pincelate/__init__.py", line 145, in spell
    return ''.join(seq[seq.index("^")+1:seq.index("$")])
ValueError: '^' is not in list
