How to get the generated query from DataSearch?

I am trying to set customQuery prop for DataSearch, and want to get the original query generated by DataSearch and modify it. However I could not figure out how exactly this can be done: props.defaultQuery cannot be accessed. I came from this issue #487 (comment) , and feel like I need some guidance on how to use customQuery in general. All examples I found are supplying a complete customized query by the author and not from modifying from the query generated by DataSearch itself. Please help!
