Make config declarative

Right now, most of the configuration does not appear to be managed via storage.js (at least in Firefox).
This prevents creating declarative configurations with nix/NixOS or via Firefox policies.

I have a heavily modified configuration, but the only entries that appear in storage.js are currency exchange rates (fx) and mouse interactivity (settings.popupInteractive).

Hi @sollniss. Most of the settings are managed using storage.sync so that it is automatically synced between devices using the same Firefox account.

The exchange rates and mouse interactivity settings, however, use storage.local so that they are specific to the current device you're using.

Would it for example be possible to make storage.local override storage.sync?
I could maybe get up a PR with some guidance if it's not too big of a change. Not sure about how other browsers work though and whether you want this behaviour to be consistent between all supported browsers.

I think it would be possible but would add code/complexity so I'd like to understand a bit better why it's needed. How do nix/NixOS and Firefox policies interact with storage.local? Is there no existing solution for handling extensions that use storage.sync?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I'm aware, normal settings are stored in an SQLite DB and can't be declared with nix as they are binary. In nix you would instead just set the above policy to configure extensions. Here is an example of how I configure the ublock origin and keepassxc browser extentions:

Thank you for the links! I'd heard of storage.managed before but never thought to use it.

Can I ask what you are trying to accomplish? And why synchronizing via a Firefox Account is not an option? That will help inform what we should do here.

I just though it would be useful to be able to configure 10ten via nix. There might be usecases for different settings per-machine, not sure what those would be though.

If the settings get synced via Firefox Account this might be less of a problem than I had thought. I will check out how this works out on my nix machine later today.
