Snapshot quality

Hi,

I have a question regarding snapshot quality, i probably don't understand how this works, but when we say "snapshot" that means the screenshot you can browse through in review, right? If you click on camera and then history, there's a vertical time bar on the right side:

This is it right ?

Why is the quality of this so bad? Doesn't it take it from a high res stream ?

I read this issue here but i am not sure I understand ... can't snapshot be taken periodically, say every 10s, why the need for detection?

I also get longer periods of "No preview found" and i could not find anything in the logs, debug enabled.

Could this be due to hardware issues if it's doing detection ?

Snapshots are static images. What you're looking at is referred to as preview, a low resolution video file.

You will only see full resolution footage in History view if your record retain mode is configured for it.

that is video yes but you can browse through like a timelapse ... that is also taken from video? but i don't keep recordings at all except events

if you check my screenshot from above, you will notice there are no events detected in this timeframe

It only shows the first 30 minutes of the hour

what you see is a screenshot, is this not a snapshot? where does this screenshot come from?

It is not a screenshot. The only media shown on that page is video based. Being recordings and the preview (that changes as you scrub the timeline)

You can easily check this by looking at the network browser tools, where you'll see it is an MP4 that is loaded

isn't this image? unless the backend creates it from mp4

You're likely looking at the current hour. The current hour views them as images until the end of the hour when they're encoded into a video. But they're effectively the same.

so, can frigate take a screenshot every, say 10s or so ? I thought that what a snapshot is.

Frigate cannot be configured to take a snapshot every 10 seconds, but you can use the API to retrieve a snapshot for your own purposes if you want.
