New storage but missing recordings #18478
-
Hello, i have a weird issue I have not pinpointed yet, perhaps someone can share an idea I bought a new ( cheap ) external SSD off aliexpress and i am not sure if it works or not ... it appears to but sometimes there are no recordings. i also updated frigate to 0.16.0 beta2 i found this in logs at the times of missing recordings, not sure if related or not ?
thanks |

Please add you config and your logs completely. Much more easy to start helping. |

Drive appears to be working from my linux shell, i have mounted it in /etc/fstab, it has 1 4TB exfat parition
I copied the frigate media folder on it and mounted is as volume to my frigate docker container
But then after a while, maybe day or two max, i get the aforementioned error entry in my frigate logs and there are no more recordings I haven't seen that error message before i put this drive in, so i figured maybe ( because it's cheap 20$ 4tb drive ) it doesn't work properly and frigate can't write anymore, thus the error message about cache full? i don't know what that means but my full frigate config is this:
i've been experimenting with ffmpeg output_args, but didn't get far. I also noticed older video files, like 10 hours+ old recordings, don't play anymore. i copied them to local machine, and not even vlc won't open them. as if they gett corrupted somehow. it could be just the crap ssd drive, but it's weird in any case. |

About 2 hours old videos get corrupted somehow, i can play any recording up to two hours old or so but after that, they don't work for instance, this is a mediainfo result for a newer video
but two hours older video file:
and it doesn't play in frigate ui and it doesn't play in vlc, but the first one does here are some recent logs with some ERROR entries. it would appear ffmpeg is crashing:
sometimes my camera also stops playing RTSP stream and i have a smart socket that reboots it when that happens, not sure if those error entries are due to camera streaming being offline even thou, home assistant will identify it and reboot it within seconds. |

disassemble it and look, there may be an ordinary USB flash drive. |

I figured it out. it's a fake "ssd" drive. it's just an SD card in a casing and not very good one either. It's very slow, only 15MB/s write speed and i doubt it's 4TB even though it identifies as 4TB. there aren't even many 4TB sd cards out there, even bad ones.
and most importantly, it's corrupting data. I've used this tool to test it https://github.com/AltraMayor/f3
I wrote about 1TB on it and the files came out corrupted.
yeah, so don't go buying cheap external "ssds" off aliexpress lol
