Upgrade containerd to v2

Hello,

Lately, containerd v2 was released, and I am eager to test some new features in my EKS cluster.

Do you have plans to upgrade it soon ?

Hello @seifrajhi, thanks for the heads up! Upgrading to containerd 2.0 is something we are tracking, but we need to do thorough testing to make sure the APIs we depend on (e.g. the soon to be deprecated Registry Mirrors) still work on Bottlerocket. I'll check with the team whether we want to keep this ticket here or in the Bottlerocket OS repo.

Does Bottlerocket have opinions on whether or not they will introduce a separate package for 2.0 or upgrade the existing dependency? Asking because containerd 2.0 includes breaking changes, so it may be worth letting customers opt into it for a period of time before setting 2.0 as the default. Also considering waiting until an LTS version has been released before turning it on as the default containerd option.

Just for practical reasons I expect a separate containerd-2.0 package at first - otherwise it's too difficult and risky to expect all the downstream consumers to take the update in lockstep.

Ideally it'll go back to a single containerd package at some point, and as you say the next LTS feels like a good time for that to happen.
