Nested items (items inside cointainer items) naming schema

Currently, when looking around or picking things up, items contained inside other items (like food in bags or paper wrapper) are displayed in the following order: [item inside] (item container) {inside item quantity} (quantity is available only on pickup)

This is not a major issue, but it does look and read strangely. This is particularly true of some other languages, such as Russian, which may lead those working on the translation to decide not to translate plural forms correctly in order to avoid this problem. Funny enough, many items were not translated correctly previously, so this issue was not that noticeable.

Describe the solution you'd like

Rearrange the string builder with one added word so that it becomes (item that is container), contains: {quantity} [item inside]

Current English: maple pies (fresh) (small cardboard box) (8/8)
Updated English: (small cardboard box), contains: (8/8) maple pies (fresh)

Current Russian: кленовых пирогов (свежее) (маленькая картонная коробка) (8/8)
Updated Russian: (маленькая картонная коробка), внутри: (8/8) кленовых пирогов (свежее)

Should be good for liquid containers too.

Additional context

The tradeoff is that items in big piles will be arranged not by their names, but by the names of the containers they are in. In my opinion, this is worthwhile.

Other than that, I don't think English-speaking people are accustomed to examining nested containers from the inside too, unless they're X-ray mutants, of course, that's respectable, so it's not only about other languages.

Another option is to consider a complete refactor of the entire UI, incorporating visual nesting. Oh yeah.

Also, I don't know how to name this suggestion properly so that it is easily searchable, so I have added all the most likely keywords.

Seems pointless to me. Adding contains also adds redundant characters cluttering up inventory UI, which is bad given they can be cut short in some cases. Speaking of, contents going first prevents UI cutoff shenanigans from hiding the more useful info of what's actually in the container, which 90% of the time is more important than what the container is.

Moving this to a discussion since this seems too minor and subjective to really warrant an issue post.

@scarf005 this is about containers that can hold liquids and wrappers or boxes that spawn naturally and contain other items, mostly food. I never implied pockets, although it would be beneficial if this system was implemented one day.

@chaosvolt fair enough; that's why I said this wasn't a major issue in the first place. I still think this is not something that should be dismissed altogether, since keeping the current UI in favor of a string assembly that disrupts the natural order of language does not seem to be ideal, especially in terms of the translation effort required (this is where I came from). For now, using the plural form for items is worse than using the singular form everywhere and adding a counter next to it, at least in this case. I apologize if that was not made obvious enough.

Ideally, this could be part of an ongoing process of dealing with the UI as a whole, since its tendency to cut out important stuff is well known and falls under umbrella #3602 (full screen advanced inventory is the best, all the space in the world for everything)

still, the content is much more important than containers; knowing one has chocolate or juice is generally more important than knowing whether it's contained in paper bag or 3L bottle

I'm not in disagreement on that. Again, this is about improving the way strings are assembled to make them read nicely and follow natural language constructions.

Another suggestion is to force the singular form of the item name when it's inside a container, as a compromise of form and function on the matter. This way, we could have:

maple pie (fresh) (small cardboard box) (8/8)
кленовый пирог (свежее) (маленькая картонная коробка) (8/8)

Which is just marginally better, and does not seem like worthwhile approach. It's basically been this way for a couple of years for ru_RU because a number of items were missing their plural form translations.

Afaik, nobody has suggested incorporating pockets into the BN, neither did I. This particular discussion focused on existing items naming that are already in the game, it's mostly about localization and doesn't affect gameplay in any way.
