Run GoLint as part of build cycle

The build cycle needs to run GoLint to check if any Go stylistic conventions are not followed.

As the first step in integrating linter in CI, I rand golangci-lint against the codebase and fixed minor issues in PR #87. There are remaining linter issues that require the author's consensus on how to fix them.
