How do I read from a Device with a timeout in 0.23.0?

I see this commit 784e34d but it does not appear in any releases that I could find.

I'm upgrading code that used to use some 0.16.0pre release from bitbucket from a long time ago and it used the timeout parameter. But 0.16.0 doesn't have it (and doesn't work with new libftdi anyways) nor does 0.23.0. I'm a little confused by the code I'm looking at right now but I do know that read timeouts don't seem to exist in official releases.

Looking at the git history, timeout was added and removed in between 0.15 and 0.16, though admittedly there was two years between these releases...

The key point is that neither released version contained read timeouts, and so it's never been properly supported (as you say wrt official releases). And all this was a long time ago...

I don't remember this very well, but from memory and looking at the code, it was an attempt to do streaming IO on the pylibftdi device (especially for data transfer over serial connections), but I never got it working well enough to release.

Do you have a specific use-case or approach in mind? The key thing is that read() (at least as implemented, not looked at libftdi possibilities at this point) is non-blocking, so a read with timeout would have to be polling on read() and waiting for some non-empty response. But then there's a tradeoff wrt latency vs CPU usage without a good answer (so making that an application-level problem is the current approach).

Having said all that, I'm getting inconsistent results wrt buffering with an FT232RL just Tx->Rx loopback and doing d.write(b'a' * 10) ; time.sleep(0.1); d.read(10) or similar in a Python REPL, so this could probably be tidied up...
