Full-wave rectifiers on OpAmp (Compressor Circuit)

Have you tried using full-wave rectifiers on OpAmp to isolate the absolute value of the input signal over a wide dynamic range of its change (from fractions of millivolts to units of volts), used for processing analog signals. How is it used, in typical examples?

Full-wave rectifying is a non-linear operation. I do some linear filtering of the input signal prior to my processing which assumes that the signal is as clean as possible. I do not think that your schematics would work with Edrumulus.
I think there is also a circuit which compresses the signal to improve the dynamic. This is also a non-linear operation. In Edrumulus, I use linear ADC and implement a clipping compensation in software to improve the dynamics. For the prototype I use, I get impressive dynamics with that.
