Allow window snapping with keyboard

Feature request description

if you do global + ctrl + (some arrow) - then you can snap a window , usually under window

but emacs doesn't have submenus besides the main emacs menu.

Anyway to build with those window submenus included?

what do you mean? are you talking about menu bar? in that case, there is no such option, but it should actually work as this functionality should be available even if the "window" menu in the bar is not available:

Regarding keybindings... I am actually not sure why, but Emacs kind of "eats" keybindings. Ideally, this is something upstream should fix and not Emacs Plus (just a regular reminder, Emacs+ is just a brew formula and not a build/distribution).

In any case, @xenodium maybe you know? You are more knowledgeable when it comes to macos/ios development.

yes wrt the snap to side but you can do it from the keyboard,

but emacs doesn't show any other menus but its single emacs

was hoping there was some kind of build flag specific for macOS exposing that

I am not 100% sure, but I am pretty confident that you don't need to have window menu in the bar for keybindings to work. Besides, menu is dynamic and can be controlled by lisp, it's just that generally GNU Emacs doesn't strive for perfect macos ux.

Still I don't know what eats keybindings, will need to debug that.

I have never had a problem using rectangle + emacs: as long as the key bindings don't overlap.

Similarly, I have dedicated keys via Hammerspoon.

Similarly, I have no issues with skhd + yabai. Although skhd has higher priority than anything in macos, so doesn't count. And to be honest, I don't know how priorities work, so I have something to read about.

Hey folks, I also want this feature and I tried hacking together a prototype on emacs-mac ... see jdtsmith/emacs-mac@emacs-mac-30_1_exp...rymndhng:emacs-mac:rayh/hack-windows-management

From my prototype, I've observed two things:

1. Exposing a Windows to the Menu Bar is necessary to get the application-wide shortcuts to work.

2. As you folks mentioned, Emacs has higher priority for keybinds. If you set an application-wide keyboard shortcut that conflicts with Emacs, you need to unbind it from Emacs.
