What is the problem that your suggestion solves?
The DataCite schema is wonderful when it comes to identifying all kinds of resources, people, and organizations. Funders can also be identified, but with only one identifier. This worked well when we only had one kind of funder identifier (CrossRefFunderID). Now the community is trying to migrate from CrossrefFunderIDs to RORs. Repositories need to decide what to do. Do they jump on the ROR train which may make it harder for established tools to find funders, or do they stick to the way they have been doing it for ever, slowing the adoption of RORs for funders...
What solution might meet your needs?
The current solution is to include the same funder twice, once with a CrossrefFunder ID and once with a ROR. This is a bit ugly. We could add a nameIdentifier list to FunderReference just like is already done for creators and contributors. This allows people to migrate to RORs without breaking anything!
