Can Instant::now() be used to exit an infinite loop on timeout reliably? (given the current bug that prevents ticking when the browser tab is asleep)

given this known bug:

Ticking during sleep
Currently a known bug is affecting browsers on operating system other then Windows. This bug prevents Instant from continuing to tick when the context is asleep. While this doesn't conflict with Rusts requirements of Instant, by chance Rust's Std rust-lang/rust#79462.

Does that mean that loops that rely on Instant::now() progressing, and that may run while the browser tab is in the background, should not do this?

let mut timer = // ... some timer with a timeout of, let's say, 0.5 secs
let mut last = Instant::now();
loop {
    do_some_work(...); // work that I only want to repeat up to a max of 0.5 secs

    let now = Instant::now();
    timer.tick(now - last);
    last = now;

    if timer.finished() {
        break;
    }
}
