Updating for the latest version of Angular

I believe that the current version of angular is 5.2.9 and I was not able to get this working with it. After reverting my cli to a lower version I was able to get it working with the angular versions in the package.json file. But being pretty new to angular, I have no idea what needs changed in this to make it work with the latest version. Is it possible to update this to the current version of angular?
