el-get-self-update fails to update (melpa directory)

El-get-self-update fails because it cannot find ~/.emacs.d/elpa/el-get.  The problem appears to be that I've installed el-get from melpa and the dir is ~/.../el-get-20230101.1231.  Is this a bug?

The melpa package does not include the info file for el-get, so reading the doc is a little difficult.
