Extending the use of localisation

Dear Thorium translators community, we are proud and lucky to have you involved in localising Thorium with human-driven, high-quality sentences.

Thorium has become a reference reading application; therefore, more and more people and organisations have been looking for a similar experience on mobile and the Web. We’ve found ways to fund such developments, and Thorium Web is already in beta, while Thorium Mobile is just starting.

Those applications will not precisely replicate the Thorium Desktop application, as they are designed to address different contexts and needs. Still, the core concepts of reading, annotating, acquiring, and lending will remain the same, so we aim to maintain a shared vocabulary.

The Thorium Reader and its translations are provided under an open-source, permissive licence, which allows anyone to reuse this material, even for closed-source projects, such as Thorium mobile.

Still, we didn't want to use your work without letting you know its destination. We also want you to be free to contribute only to the desktop application if you don’t want to spend more time.

As a first step, Thorium Web has been added as a new component to the Thorium Reader Weblate project. You will be able to reuse existing translations from the Thorium Glossary Component and the Thorium Reader translation component.

As the Thorium Web project is not yet in a stable version, we recommend waiting before enlisting as translators on this new project. We’ll let you know when we find it's ready.

Aside, we will change the name of the Thorium Reader translation component. So far, we see that it will change the URL, meaning some updates are needed on links, bookmarks, and the GitHub action configuration as well. We’ll let you know once we are ready for this shift.
