I tried --recurse-submodules and --recursive but neither brought in LVGL and eez-framework

In eclipse build fails project may be incomplete, but it is only due to: "arm-none-eabi-objcopy.exe: not found" as seen in console vies.

I cannot see how your Readme instuctions can work as there is no CMakeLists.txt. I would like to try this as erasing and loading the STM32F469 take a long time.

The README instructions are not valid for this project and needs to be corrected. For now, this project can only be built using STM32CubeIDE and tested on the stm32f469-disco development board. Building Linux, Windows and Emscripten version is not currently supported. Sorry for this confusion. However, I'm not sure why --recurse-submodules and --recursive doesn't works for you.

Same problem with LVGL and eez-framework. Links to respective repos are broken. So they are not present in the final project, and it doesn't compile.
All 3 projects for STM32F469i-disco are broken. Check https://github.com/eez-open/stm32h745i-disco-lvgl-demo, which is ok

Can you try it again, it should be fixed now.

FYI With the latest commit this example is now ported to the latest version of LVGL (v9.3.0 dev). Check the README.md, there is one important thing you need to do to flash the ROM. This is because QSPI external storage is now used for the fonts and images.
