Using other Simulators instead of Iverilog

My team have created a firmware code for our user project in /verilog/dv/ . And we want to build a framework or a script that can help running firmware code and simulating HW by other simulators instead of Iverilog only. Is there anyone who has changed the simulator successfully? Can you all give me the overview?
I found this script in sim.makefile which can be called when I run "make verify-(name)-rtl". I wonder that whether I can change it for running other simulator? If this is possible, how to do that (Use ModelSim, for example) ? Thanks you guys for your help!
