The dock immediately disappears after showing

What Happened?

The dock disappears immediately after hovering. The dock seems to move beyond the mouse position, so it no longer intersects with it.

Also, "touching" the bottom of the screen with the cursor at a point left or right that does not intersect with the dock makes it disappear immediately. The cursor must be on top of the dock to keep it visible.

Maybe #300 could help a bit here by giving users time to actually make contact with the dock before it disappears.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Move the mouse down to make the dock appear
2. Keep the mouse down at the bottom of the screen
3. Dock immediately disappears

Expected Behavior

The dock should not disappear if the mouse position is below the dock.

I'm also having problems with this. I set the Dock to hide when it isn't in use, so I can maximize my screen space. The new fast-hide behavior (and gap underneath the dock) makes Dock nearly unusable compared with Plank in elementaryOS 7.1. Dock is incredibly twitchy. Increased timeouts might help, but unless there's an option to change the Hide Delay (like Plank has), there's always going to be some unhappy users - either too slow for gamers with twitch reactions, or too fast for middle-age people like me.

I think much of the problem is that Dock doesn't extend to the very bottom of the screen (unlike Plank), so it doesn't get to benefit from Fitts' Law. Fitts' Law says that UI items along the edge of the screen have an infinite target area that doesn't require precise mouse movements, because you can throw the mouse onto the edge of the screen & it won't go beyond it. Extending Dock to the bottom of the screen would help the Dock to persist while it is in use.

I don't regard myself as a user with accessibility needs, but this feels like a big accessibility regression. If I'm struggling to use it, I can't imagine what it's like for someone with more restricted mobility.

Same setup as others above: 8.0 Circe, Classic Session X11, have also run all updates.

Are you all still experiencing this issue? We've re-introduced hide delay like Plank had and as far as I can tell the dock stays revealed when the mouse is against the screen edge in the current daily

Dock is feeling improved to me now, it's much more usable!

There are still some edge cases. I have the dock set to hide and with only a few items (say 10). If I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen, but too far left of where the dock actually begins (remember the dock was hidden so I can't see how wide the target is), I get a case where the dock appears but immediately disappears again. This is because the mouse is at the bottom of the screen, but outside the range of the dock - like a simultaneous mouseover & mouseout event.

On my Mac (an older one running 10.13), the behavior is that moving the mouse to anywhere along the bottom of the screen will cause the dock to appear, even if it isn't actually over the dock itself. The dock remains visible until the mouse moves above the height of the dock, anywhere along the bottom of the screen, even if the mouse isn't actually over the dock. Moving the mouse out of the dock to the left or right doesn't actually initiate a mouseout event, only once the mouse goes above the default dock height. Also, the subtle larger resizing of the dock icons as you move over them means there's some buffer room at the top for the mouseout event, not a straight-line pixel border. It's either triggered by going above the default height of the dock (if the mouse isn't over an icon), or by going above the actual height of the enlarged icon. I'm not suggesting you need to implement that resizing behavior or copy the Mac, just explaining some of the usability thinking behind how they avoid "twitchy" dock behavior.

This is still happening on the Classic session. When I have a maximized window and want to show the dock, it hides again, as if the gap under the dock was not a part of it. This makes it incredibly difficult to switch between apps.

@JohnDumpling Have you applied all the updates in System Settings -> System? There were a couple of released recently that should have fixed the issue

I have since switched to the Secure session, as it is much smoother. But just to test, I played with different window sizes and tried switching between them in the Classic session, and so far so good. Although when reordering the apps via drag-and-drop, the dock hides even when I'm right above it. But that's for a separate issue.
