Using this program is very nice, but still, it feels as a quite impersonal and detached experience.
Just having the cameras on would vastly improve the experience and deal with this main culprit.

However, most users don't seem to use the camera at all, and I suspect that most do not turn them on because others do not turn them on either.

I'd suggest changing the default. The camera should not be off by default. Instead of this, maybe it should be ON by default, and the user would have to turn it off when not wanting to use it.

Also, ReaNINJAM might be more prevalent still.

I think historically there were some worries about Video clogging the system or causing issues with clients other than Jamtaba. The bigger dev issue with video right now is that its not in sync with the audio.
