OOPSLA and ICFP are top-tier PL venues #8893

I think that nowadays most would recognize that OOPSLA is one of the top-tier PL venues. The second-tier PL venues are more like ESOP, ECOOP, and CGO (still excellent conferences with very high standard, just not exactly top-tier).

The same probably goes for ICFP, although its small size makes it more borderline – its standards are probably even higher than OOPSLA's, but it does not have as much visibility to the rest of the community.

The fact that the tier list was established by surveying only the PC members of POPL and PLDI is shockingly unscientific. Many in these two communities might be biased against competing conferences. For example, I have noticed how:

  • some in the "systems" part of PL, namely PLDI, scoff at anything "functional programming"; and
  • conversely, how many in the "theory" part of PL scoff at object-oriented programming (which OOPSLA no longer stands for, but may still carry the stigma of).
